A magnetic stirrer or magnetic mixer is a laboratory device used for mixing liquids. It uses a rotating magnetic element to rotate a stir bar (also called "flea") that is immersed in the liquid. The rotating magnetic field is produced either by a rotating magnet or by a stationary electromagnet installed beneath the vessel.
Magnetic stirrers are used frequently in chemistry and biology. They operate in hermetically sealed vessels and other closed systems without the need for complex rotary seals. They are preferred over instrument-driven mechanical stirrers. This preference is due to their quiet operation and the absence of external transferring parts that may break, except for the basic bar magnet.
Magnetic stir bars are suitable for glass vessels commonly used in chemical reactions. Glass does not materially affect the magnetic field. Their small size restricts the use of magnetic stirrers to experiments of 4 litres or less. They are less effective with viscous fluids or thick suspensions. For large volumes or especially viscous liquids, mechanical stirring is required.
Because of their small dimensions, stir bars are easier to clean and sterilise than other stirring devices. No lubricants are required, thereby minimising the risk of contaminating the reaction vessel and its contents. Magnetic stirrers might also include a heating plate or an alternative method for heating the liquid.
Our magnetic stirrers are applied across a range of scientific disciplines:
Chemistry: They provide even mixing of reagents, solutions and chemical reaction mixtures to support reproducible results.
Biology: They are used to mix cell cultures, enzyme assays and biochemical reactions.
Pharmacology: They mix components in pharmaceutical formulations and assist in stability tests.
Food Science: They mix ingredients, emulsify solutions and prepare samples for analysis.
Research: They are employed for material testing, dissolution studies and other research applications.
Compact Design: Our magnetic stirrers have a compact footprint. They provide measured mixing performance that meets experimental requirements.
Safety Features: Safety is critical in laboratory environments. The stirrers include flat platforms, non-slip surfaces and an inbuilt overheat protection. These measures ensure safe operation during experiments.
Convenience: The system allows for free use of hands during experiments.
Precision: Adjustable speed levels permit controlled mixing.
Versatility: The device can be adapted for various laboratory applications in different scientific fields.
Space Efficiency: Lab space is optimised without compromising mixing performance.
Reliability: Our magnetic stirrers comply with established industry standards and research protocols.
