Description of Diamond Tools

A diamond tool is a cutting instrument with diamond particles attached to its working components by a binder or an alternative method. Because diamond has a hardness rating of 10, these tools offer advantages in efficiency, wear resistance, service life, dressing duration and overall costs. They are categorised by application. They include diamond grinding tools and diamond cutting tools. Diamond-coated spiral drills are used as cutting instruments. Additional categories are diamond drilling tools, diamond saw tools and diamond pulling tools.[1]

Powder metallurgical diamond tools are frequently used in the machining of natural stones and other hard-to-cut materials such as reinforced concrete or asphalt. To maintain tool productivity at low cost, the composition must match workpiece characteristics and operating conditions. A designed matrix secures the diamond particles and wears quickly enough to remove worn particles. This process sustains tool sharpness and extends tool lifespan. The wear resistance of the metallic matrix is modulated by adding softer or harder constituents to the powder mixture.[2]

Applications of Diamond Tools

Diamond tools are applied in the following areas:

• Geological or project-related exploration: Geological diamond core bits, diamond oil drilling bits and thin-wall diamond core bits are used. Their primary application is in the oil and gas industry and mining.
• Stone processing: Diamond circular saw blades, diamond wire saws and diamond band saws are used for cutting marble, granite and other stone blocks. Diamond rope saws remove raw stone blocks in quarries. Formed diamond tools shape stone. Resin-bonded diamond polishing pads are applied for stone polishing.
• Construction: Medium and small diamond saw blades, diamond core bits and some diamond grinding tools are used in road repair, building refurbishment and material processing.
• Wood processing: Composite laminate flooring is common. Its wear characteristics require the use of diamond tools typically applied in stone processing, such as PKD circular saw blades, profile cutters and spiral drills.
• Processing of automotive spare parts: PKD and PCBN cutting tools are used to meet efficiency and precision requirements in automotive spare parts processing.
• Processing of IT and household appliance products: Ultra-thin, high-precision diamond grinding discs are applied for silicon wafer cutting. Resin-bonded diamond grinding discs are used in ceramic processing in the fibre optics industry.
• Processing of engineering ceramics: Engineering ceramics are used in various industries owing to their high fracture toughness, hardness and temperature resistance. For machining these ceramics, diamond grinding discs with high durability are developed.
• Processing of carbide tools and other mechanical tools: Diamond tools are employed to achieve machining precision and efficiency in the processing of carbide and other mechanical tools.[3]
