Lanthan is a soft, ductile, malleable, silver‐white rare earth element. It belongs to the group of lanthanides or lanthanoids. Lanthan reacts promptly, oxidises rapidly in air and ignites easily when exposed to flame.
Lanthan is used as an anodic material in Nickel‐Metal Hydride batteries that are employed in hybrid vehicles. Lanthan(III) oxide (La2O3) is utilised in the manufacture of specialised optical glasses to improve alkali resistance.
