The major use of magnesium is a component of alloys or ceramic and crystals. Magnesium alloys (Mg alloys) are a series of mixtures of magnesium with other elements. The elements used can be aluminum, copper, zinc, rare earth elements, silicon, zirconium, and others. As the lightest structural metal, alloys of magnesium have been used in various products including airplanes and performance cars.
Symbol: Mg
Atomic number: 12
Atomic mass: 24.305
Element category: Alkaline earth metal
Although magnesium is abundant in the Earth’s crust, the free element, an alkaline earth metal, does not occur naturally. Consequently, magnesium is primarily used as a component in alloys, ceramics and crystals. Magnesium alloys are mixtures of magnesium with other elements. The components may include aluminium, copper, zinc, rare earths, silicon, zirconium and others. As one of the lightest construction metals, magnesium alloys are employed in products such as aircraft and high-performance vehicles.

Lightweight material: Magnesium is one of the lightest construction metals. It is used in sectors where weight reduction is critical, for example in the automotive and aerospace industries.
High strength-to-weight ratio: Despite its low density, magnesium exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio. This permits the manufacture of materials that are both durable and lightweight for various applications.
Corrosion resistance: Magnesium demonstrates natural resistance to corrosion when properly alloyed. This property is important for applications exposed to harsh or corrosive environments.
Thermal conductivity: Magnesium is an efficient conductor of heat. This makes it suitable for applications that require efficient heat dissipation, such as in electronic devices and automotive components.
Biocompatibility: Due to its biocompatibility, magnesium is considered for medical implants. Its compatibility with the human body is beneficial for both orthopaedic and cardiovascular applications.
At Stanford Advanced Materials, we offer a wide selection of magnesium products that conform to strict quality standards. Our range includes:
