Sulphur is used for the vulcanisation of black rubber, as a fungicide and in black gunpowder. Most sulphur is employed to produce sulphuric acid, which is manufactured at high volumes in western civilisation. Phosphoric acid is produced from sulphuric acid, and phosphates are extracted for use in fertiliser production.
Several allotropes of sulphur exist. The most common allotrope appears as yellow crystals or powder.
Sulphur is used in the vulcanisation of black rubber, as a fungicide and in black gunpowder. However, most sulphur is applied in the production of sulphuric acid, a key chemical in Western civilisation. Consequently, sulphuric acid is converted into phosphoric acid for the extraction of phosphates for fertilisers.
Mercaptans are a family of organosulphur compounds. Some compounds are added to natural gas supplies because of their distinctive odour, thereby facilitating the detection of gas leaks. Others are used in silver polish and in the manufacture of pesticides and herbicides.
Sulfites are employed in paper bleaching and as preservatives in many foodstuffs. Many surfactants and detergents are sulphate derivatives. Calcium sulphate (gypsum) is quarried at an annual volume of approximately 100 000 000 tonnes for use in cement and plaster.
