Metal foam denotes specific metallic materials that contain foam pores. These materials are employed in energy, transport, medicine, aeronautics and aerospace, and other areas.
Foam metal refers to specialised metal materials that contain foam pores; the diameter of these pores can reach up to 7 mm. The mechanical strength decreases as porosity increases; under high pressure, significant deformation may occur, thereby allowing the metal foam to absorb energy. Thermal conductivity decreases with increasing porosity. When porosity reaches 50% or greater, thermal conductivity is reduced by several factors; consequently, heat transfer occurs at a slower rate. Due to these characteristics, foam metal is frequently used in the energy, transport, medical, aerospace and other sectors.
