Zirconium Carbonitride Powder Description
Carbonitrides are produced by carbothermal reduction and nitriding of zirconium oxide at elevated temperatures in a vacuum furnace. Subsequently, the material is milled to achieve the desired particle size distribution. The powder produced using this patented method exhibits a spherical morphology and a narrow particle size distribution compared with zirconium carbonitride Zr(C,N) produced from zirconium metal.
Physical Properties of Zirconium Carbonitride Powder
Typical composition ratios ZrC/ZrN 50/50, 30/70, 70/30
Grain sizes: 0.9 - 2.1 mm
Typical Applications of Zirconium Carbonitride Powder
Carbonitrides serve as the raw material for manufacturing Cermets, a metal–ceramic composite that exhibits high hardness, oxidation resistance, wear resistance and toughness. Cermets are used as tools in metal processing. Consequently, they require additives such as Mo2C, TaC, NbC and, in specific cases, WC. These additives may be produced as mixed crystals with titanium carbonitride. In combination with Al2O3, Zr(C,N) forms a wear-resistant cutting ceramic for machining cast iron.
