W-Type Molybdenum Disilicide Heating Rods Description
The W-type molybdenum disilicide heating elements are known for their durability and reliability at high temperatures. The W heating rod is generally mounted horizontally. Owing to its heat‐generating end, the heating efficiency is higher and more cost‐effective than other heating elements. This heating element comprises two cold ends (Lu) and three or more U‑shaped hot zones (Le). Typically, the Lu has a diameter that is twice as large as the Le.
MoSi2 heating elements are manufactured using powder metallurgy. They consist of molybdenum disilicide and additives that prevent recrystallisation. Given that MoSi2 remains completely stable at 1 800°C (3 270°F), it achieves a higher temperature performance than other types of heating elements. The oxidation resistance of the MoSi2 element is maintained through the formation of an impermeable, quartz‑ or glass‑like protective layer, which reforms during operation if it is damaged.
MoSi2 components have a low specific resistance and exhibit a positive resistance–temperature characteristic. Compared with metal‐based heating elements, they can be utilised at very high watt loads. Consequently, owing to their high‑temperature oxidation resistance, MoSi2 resistors maintain a constant temperature throughout their service life. Even when installed in series, new and existing components may be operated simultaneously within the same furnace.
