Gadolinium is a rare‐earth element with a high magnetic moment. It can increase signal intensity by shortening relaxation times. It is used in the manufacture of semiconductors and for shielding nuclear reactors. In combination with EDTA ligands, gadolinium is used as an injectable contrast agent for MRI. Gadolinium acetate is a rare‐earth compound of gadolinium. It is water‐soluble and decomposes upon heating to form gadolinium oxide.
