Zirconium is a metal that demonstrates high strength, malleability and ductility and exhibits a silver-grey lustre. In powder form, zirconium combusts while resisting corrosion and elevated temperatures. Researchers used hafnium and titanium as reference materials during material property evaluations.
Zirconium metal appears as a silvery metal and has a density of 6,52 g/cm³. In the 1990s, approximately 90% of the annual production of zirconium was consumed by the nuclear industry in the form of zirconium tubes for the manufacture of fuel rods. However, as greater familiarity with zirconium and its compounds has developed, additional applications have been identified. Zirconium metal exhibits high mechanical strength at elevated temperatures and demonstrates marked resistance to corrosive chemicals. Typical products include tubes, rods, sheets and foils. Given that zirconium metal withstands high temperatures (melting point 1800 °C), zirconium crucibles are frequently used for the melting of other metals. Pure zirconium is also utilised as a lining in jet engines.
It has been determined that zirconium-based alloys possess distinct properties. Zirconium was employed in the manufacture of superconducting high-temperature alloys, and zirconium crystal rods are often used as raw material for the production of high-purity zirconium metal. Zirconium alloys are considered promising materials for commercial amorphous metal, also known as metallic glass. In comparison to conventional amorphous metal materials based on iron, zirconium alloys more readily transition to the amorphous phase.
The primary end-applications of zircon (ZrSiO4) include refractory materials, ceramic opacifiers and foundry sands. Zircon is also marketed as a natural gemstone for jewellery manufacture.
Durable and resistant: Zirconium metal has a long service life. Its high resistance to corrosion, even in aggressive environments, qualifies it for applications where longevity is required.
Nuclear applications: The low neutron absorption cross-section and corrosion resistance of zirconium have made it a key component in nuclear reactors, especially as cladding for fuel rods.
Aerospace and defence: Zirconium alloys play an important role in aerospace and defence, contributing to the development of lightweight and stable components for aircraft and rocket systems.
Chemical processing: Owing to its resistance to corrosive substances, zirconium is used in the design of reactors, heat exchangers and other critical equipment in chemical processing.
Medical implants: The biocompatibility and wear resistance of zirconium have led to its application in medical implants, particularly in joint replacements and dental applications.
