The primary use of Yttrium is the production of phosphors. Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) and yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) are both combined with Europium to produce a red phosphor. This phosphor is used in cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions and in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Yttrium is also used as an additive in alloys to increase the strength of aluminium and magnesium alloys.
Symbol: Y
Atomic Number: 39
Atomic Mass: 88.90584
Element Category: Transition Metal
Yttrium is a silvery-metallic transition metal. It is present in most rare earth minerals alongside the Lanthanides.

Yttrium has no known biological function, and exposure to Yttrium compounds may cause pulmonary diseases in humans.
