Yttrium is a silvery-metallic transition metal, found in most rare-earth minerals. Its most important use is in the production of phosphors. Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) and yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) are combined with europium to produce the red phosphor used in television cathode ray tube (CRT) displays and in LEDs. Yttrium is also utilised as an additive in alloys to increase the strength of aluminium and magnesium alloys.
Yttrium has no known biological role, and exposure to yttrium compounds may result in lung disease in humans.
