Ruthenium is a multivalent white hard metal that is classified within the platinum group, alongside Rhodium, Palladium, Osmium, Iridium and Platinum.
Symbol: Ru
Atomic Number: 44
Atomic Mass: 101.07
Element Category: Transition metal
Ruthenium is a multivalent white hard metal. It is grouped with Rhodium, Palladium, Osmium, Iridium and Platinum in the platinum group.
It is used as a hardening agent in Palladium or Platinum alloys to produce wear‐resistant electrical contacts. Titanium is added to improve corrosion resistance.
Numerous new applications for Ruthenium are under development. Most are utilised in the electronics industry for chip resistors and electrical contacts. In the chemical industry, ruthenium oxide is applied to coat the anodes in electrochemical cells for chlorine production. Ruthenium is also employed in catalysts for the production of ammonia and acetic acid. Ruthenium compounds can be utilised in solar cells that convert light energy into electrical energy.
Ruthenium is one of the most effective hardening agents for Platinum and Palladium. It is alloyed with these metals to produce electrical contacts with high wear resistance. In some jewellery items it is alloyed with Platinum.
