Engineers employ neodymium compounds as glass colouring agents. They have maintained frequent use as additives. The Nd3+ ion produces the compounds’ colour. The appearance is typically reddish-violet, but it varies with the type of lighting.
This section lists binary compounds of neodymium with halogens (referred to as halides), oxygen (oxides) and hydrogen (hydrides), as well as various other neodymium compounds. For each compound, a formal oxidation state is provided. The digital configuration is offered as a guide only. Note that the term hydride refers to compounds of the form MxHy and does not indicate that the compounds necessarily behave chemically as hydrides. The predominant oxidation state of neodymium is 3.
Hydrides
The designation hydride is used for compounds with the formula MxHy. This does not imply chemical behaviour characteristic of traditional hydrides.
