Sodium Citrate Powder Description
Sodium citrate powder (CAS 68-04-2) at room temperature is a white powder, odourless and stable in air. Its relative density is 1.857 (at 23.5°C). It loses water of crystallisation at 150°C and decomposes upon further heating. Sodium citrate powder is water-soluble. The pH value of its aqueous solution is approximately 8, and it is poorly soluble in ethanol.
During clinical blood collection, it is necessary to add disinfected sodium citrate to prevent blood coagulation; therefore, sodium citrate is used as an anticoagulant. Additionally, it is used as a flavouring agent and stabiliser in the food and beverage industry. In the detergent industry, it may replace sodium tripolyphosphate as a non-toxic detergent additive. Furthermore, sodium citrate is used in the brewing industry, for injection purposes and in electroplating.
