Introduction Ancestral phenotypic plasticity is suggested to aid adaptation, but evidence is inconsistent. This study examines the role of ancestral plasticity in gene expression evolution in zinc-tolerant Silene uniflora, finding reversion patterns and genetic assimilation of beneficial traits. The research highlights the influence of ancestral plasticity on parallel adaptation, despite gene expression convergence between independent lineages.
