Iron Compounds And Catalysts

Three oxygen compounds of iron have been documented. The compounds include Iron(II) oxide and two forms of Iron(III) oxide. The iron oxide with a greenish to black appearance is used primarily as a pigment in glass production. One form of Iron(III) oxide appears as a reddish‐brown to black powder. Its finely powdered red variant polishes precious metals and diamonds. It is also used in cosmetics. The other form of Iron(III) oxide is employed in the production of ferrites. Ferrites have high magnetic permeability and high electrical resistance. They are used in specific computer memories and as coatings for magnetic tapes. The compound also serves as a pigment and polishing agent.
