Description of Nano-Tin-Oxide Powder
Tin oxide is a powder that appears white, pale yellow or pale grey. It exhibits a square, hexagonal or orthorhombic crystalline structure. Its melting point is 1 630 ℃ and its boiling point is 1 800 ℃. It functions as a transparent electrically conductive material and was the first commercially available material of this type to improve electrical conductivity and stability.
Applications of Nano-Tin-Oxide Powder
1. It is used in the production of enamel and magnetic materials, and for manufacturing milk‐white glass, tin salts, porcelain dyes, fabric dyes, weight‐increasing agents and polishers for steel and glass.
2. Tin oxide (SnO2) electrodes are used in high-grade optical glass melts and in the electrolytic aluminium industry. These electrodes are particularly applicable in the production of flint glass, barium flint, barium main and heavy crown glass melts; they do not contaminate the glass.
3. SnO2 is an important semiconductor sensor material. It is used for the production of highly sensitive gas sensors. It finds application in detecting specific combustible gases, pollutants, industrial emissions and harmful gases. SnO2 is also employed as a moisture sensor and as a substrate material in indoor environment monitoring in precision instrument rooms, libraries, art galleries and museums. By doping SnO2 with measured quantities of CoO, Co2O3, Cr2O3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, varistors with differing resistances can be produced for power systems, electronic circuits and household appliances.
4. Owing to its optical transmittance, SnO2 exhibits high visible light permeability, good chemical stability in aqueous solutions and specific electrical conductivity while reflecting certain infrared radiation characteristics. Consequently, SnO2 is applied in lithium batteries, solar batteries, LCD displays, optoelectronic devices and transparent conductive electrodes, and in applications requiring protection against infrared detection. Nano-form SnO2 exhibits changes in physical properties in terms of light, heat and electricity as a result of size reduction, quantum size effects, surface effects and macroscopic quantum tunnelling. Therefore, the use of nanomaterials improves the performance of the sensor material.
