Tungsten Medical Radiation Shielding Description
In post‐load radiation therapy, radiopharmaceuticals are injected into the body via an injection catheter. During the treatment, the radiopharmaceuticals are contained within a medical shield made of a tungsten alloy, thereby protecting patients and medical personnel from radiation exposure.
The use of lead as a shielding material in radiation therapy is detrimental to human health, and uranium-based shielding against gamma rays exhibits significant radioactivity. Given that tungsten alloys are non-toxic and environmentally acceptable, they are increasingly employed in the manufacture of medical devices.

Applications of Tungsten Medical Radiation Shielding
Tungsten Medical Radiation Shielding is used in positron emission tomography (PET) systems.
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that is primarily used for diagnosing diseases. X‐rays penetrate the human body, and PET is able to record the transmission effect of a specific organ. The procedure requires the injection of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) into the body, with the FDG stored in a syringe shield and subsequently administered to the patient. As the FDG passes through the body, it emits gamma rays, which are detected by the gamma camera. The resulting data quantifies the chemical reactions occurring within organs and cells, thereby identifying abnormal reactions that may indicate the presence of a tumour.

The tungsten-based medical radiation shielding is clearly marked to facilitate efficient identification and quality control. Measures are implemented to ensure that damage does not occur during storage or transport.
