NLO crystals (Non-linear Optical Crystals) extend the laser wavelength range from the deep ultraviolet to the far infrared. They utilise second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG). They also employ sum frequency generation (SFG), difference frequency generation (DFG) and optical parametric oscillators (OPO).
NLO crystals (Non-linear Optical Crystals) are used to extend the laser spectrum from the deep ultraviolet to the far infrared. They achieve this by utilising various harmonic generation processes. These include second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG), sum frequency generation (SFG), difference frequency generation (DFG) and the application of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs).
Commonly used non-linear crystals
- BBO is the most widely used NLO crystal. It offers a large transparent wavelength range with adjustable phase matching. It provides high conversion efficiency and a high damage threshold. BBO is slightly hygroscopic.
- KTP exhibits high conversion efficiency and is non-hygroscopic. It presents a good price-to-performance ratio. It is generally employed for SHG in Nd: lasers operating at medium or low power. KTP is also used when 1064 nm pumped OPOs generate infrared radiation. It shows an extremely low damage threshold.
- LBO offers a high damage threshold and attains non-critical phase matching for SHG at 1064 nm. This quality makes LBO a suitable crystal in high-power 1064-nm systems with increased energy consumption.
- KDP, DKDP (deuterated KDP, KD*P) and ADP are available in large sizes at low cost. KD*P is sometimes employed in Pockels cells.
- AgGaS2 and AgGaSe2 are used in infrared applications. AgGaS2 is typically applied in OPO and DFG processes to produce infrared radiation.
