Nitrogen is essential for life on Earth. It constitutes a part of all proteins and exists in every living system. Nitrogen compounds are present in natural substances, foodstuffs, fertilisers, explosives and toxins. Excess nitrogen, consequently, damages the environment.
Nitrogen, named after the Greek word nitron meaning "native soda" and genes meaning "to form", is the fifth most abundant element in the universe. According to the Los Alamos Countrywide Laboratory, nitrogen constitutes 78 per cent of the Earth’s atmosphere. In contrast, the Martian atmosphere comprises 2.6 per cent nitrogen.
In its gaseous form, nitrogen is colourless and odourless and is generally considered inert. In its liquid form, nitrogen is also colourless and odourless. According to Los Alamos, liquid nitrogen presents an appearance that matches that of water.
One important nitrogen compound is ammonia (NH3), which can be produced via the Haber process, in which nitrogen is reacted with hydrogen. The colourless, foul-smelling ammonia can be liquefied to produce nitrogen fertiliser. Approximately 80 per cent of produced ammonia is used as fertiliser, and it is also employed as a coolant and in the manufacture of plastics, textiles, pesticides and dyes as well as in cleaning agents, according to the Big Apple Department of the country.
At SAM (Stanford Advanced Materials) we recognise that nitrogen plays a crucial role in various sectors. Our production processes maintain strict adherence to defined purity standards, and our technical team provides specific support to ensure that nitrogen products meet the rigorous requirements of the industry.
Wide range of applications: Our nitrogen products are applicable for multiple uses. They are used to create inert atmospheres in material processing and for cryogenic cooling in several sectors.
Purity and consistency: Our manufacturing methods achieve high levels of purity and consistency. Both nitrogen gas and liquid nitrogen comply with the strict standards required by industry.
Technical expertise: Our team possesses detailed knowledge regarding the properties and applications of nitrogen. We provide tailored technical support and advice to assist in selecting the appropriate nitrogen solution for specific requirements.
Reliable supply: We understand the importance of continuous nitrogen supply. Our global network and efficient logistics ensure that nitrogen products are accessible when and where they are needed.
SAM offers two primary nitrogen products, each with distinct applications and benefits:
Nitrogen gas: Our nitrogen gas is available in various grades of purity to meet specific requirements. It is used in sectors such as electronics, food packaging and chemical processing.
Liquid nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen is a cryogenic substance utilised in a range of applications. Its uses include cryopreservation, medical procedures and research in low temperature physics.
At SAM we recognise that gases underpin numerous industrial processes. Our nitrogen products are available in gaseous and cryogenic forms. They support operational performance in different sectors.
