Phosphorus reacts immediately with available compounds, thereby preventing its occurrence as a free element in terrestrial materials. Research has identified three allotropes of phosphorus: white phosphorus, red phosphorus and black phosphorus.
Symbol: P
Atomic number: 15
Atomic mass: 30.973761998
Element category: polyatomic non‑metal, occasionally considered a metalloid
Due to its high reactivity, phosphorus does not occur as a free element on Earth. It exists in three primary allotropes: white phosphorus, red phosphorus and black phosphorus.
White phosphorus is the most hazardous allotrope. It is toxic and ignites spontaneously when exposed to air. Red phosphorus is produced by heating white phosphorus or by exposure to sunlight. Black phosphorus is the least reactive allotrope; it is produced by heating white phosphorus but requires high pressure or metal salts as catalysts.
The primary use of phosphorus is in the production of phosphoric acid, which is used to manufacture fertilisers and various other specialised products.
Stanford Advanced Materials (SAM) now offers the following phosphorus products:
Available in 5.5N or 6N grade; electrical grade phosphorus pentoxide.
Electrical grade phosphoric acid, used as a cleaning and etching agent in TFT‑LCD and IC production.
Purity of 98.5% or 99%, usable as a stabiliser for plastics and in water treatment, bleaching and the cleaning industry.
