Calcium is a reactive, soft metal that belongs to the alkaline earth metals. It is found in the minerals dolomite, gypsum, plagioclase, amphibole, pyroxene and garnet.
Calcium metal is used as a reducing agent in the production of other metals such as thorium and uranium. It is also employed as an alloying agent for aluminium, beryllium, copper, lead and magnesium alloys.
Calcium compounds occur extensively. Extensive limestone deposits (calcium carbonate) are used directly as a building material and indirectly in cement manufacture. When limestone is heated in kilns, it emits carbon dioxide and yields quicklime (calcium oxide). This reacts vigorously with water to form slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). Slaked lime is used in cement production, as a soil improver, in water treatment to reduce acidity and in the chemical industry. It is also employed in steelmaking to remove impurities from molten iron ore. When mixed with sand, slaked lime absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and sets as lime mortar.
Gypsum (calcium sulphate) is utilised by builders as a construction material and by nurses for setting fractured bones as “Plaster of Paris”.
