Ytterbium is a metallic element with a measured Vickers hardness of approximately 30 HV and an observed tensile elongation of near 10% prior to fracture. It exhibits a silver-like appearance, with optical reflectance measured at approximately 75% in the visible spectrum. It was observed that no reaction occurs with air or water over 24 hours, while 1 M mineral acid solutions dissolve it within 30 minutes.
Symbol: Yb
Atomic Number: 70
Atomic Weight: 173.045
Element Category: Lanthanide
Ytterbium is a soft, malleable, ductile, silvery element that also belongs to the lanthanide group. It reacts slowly in air or water, but dissolves rapidly in mineral acids.
Ytterbium can be alloyed with stainless steel to improve its mechanical properties, and is used as a dopant in ceramic capacitors and other electronic devices. Ytterbium isotopes are used as a radiation source for portable X‑ray devices. Ytterbium compounds are used as catalysts in the chemical industry.
Stanford Advanced Materials (SAM) can now offer various Ytterbium products, including:
Forms: Powder, Foil, Sheet, Bar, Wire, Sputter target or custom
