Aluminium nitride (AlN) is a ceramic material exhibiting a light grey or white appearance. It presents a density of 3.26 g/cm³. Surface oxidation occurs in air at room temperature, thereby producing an aluminium oxide layer that protects the material up to 1370 °C.
Aluminium nitride (AlN) is a light grey or white ceramic material with a density of 3.26 g/cm³. Surface oxidation occurs in air at room temperature; the resulting aluminium oxide layer protects the material up to 1370 °C. In comparison with aluminium, the traditional technical ceramic, aluminium nitride shows improved thermal conductivity and a higher hardness. AlN was first synthesised in 1877; however, its potential for microelectronics applications was recognised in the mid-1980s. Owing to its high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulation, aluminium nitride is used in the microelectronics industry. Metallisation processes enable the use of aluminium nitride in electronic applications in a manner analogous to aluminium oxide and beryllium oxide.
The hardness of aluminium nitride ceramics exceeds that of aluminium oxide, the traditional technical ceramic. This property qualifies it for applications that require high wear resistance.
