Silicon nitride is a ceramic material with a high melting point. It exhibits high hardness and chemical inertness. Manufacturers produce the material by heating pulverised silicon in a nitrogen atmosphere. The temperature is maintained between 1 300 °C and 1 400 °C during production. Subsequently, the silicon nitride powder is sintered into the required shape.
Silicon nitride is one of the most thermodynamically stable engineering ceramic materials and exhibits high hardness. It is ideally suited for bearings, particularly those operating at high speeds and elevated temperatures. Si3N4 bearing balls are used in automobiles, rocket turbine systems, devices in corrosive environments and select high-performance model vehicles. In comparison to steel, ceramic balls demonstrate improved mechanical properties at high temperatures and withstand most corrosive chemicals.
Silicon nitride has been applied in high-temperature settings such as rocket engines. It is one of the few monolithic ceramic materials that can withstand severe thermal shock and temperature gradients in hydrogen-oxygen rocket engines.
