Samarium oxide is available as a powder and as dense pellets for use in optical coatings and thin film applications. The oxide is generally insoluble. Fluorides represent an insoluble form used in applications where the presence of oxygen is unwanted. They are employed in metallurgy, chemical gas phase deposition, physical gas phase deposition and certain optical coatings.
Samarium oxides are available in powder form and as densely compressed pellets for applications such as optical coatings and thin-film processes. The oxides are generally insoluble. Fluorides offer an additional insoluble form for applications in which oxygen is undesired, for example in metallurgy, in chemical and physical gas phase deposition, and in certain optical coatings. Samarium is also available in soluble forms, including chlorides, nitrates, and acetates. These compounds can be prepared as solutions with defined stoichiometries.
Samarium is used for doping calcium chloride crystals for use in optical lasers. It is also employed in infrared-absorbing glass and as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. Samarium oxide is used in glass and ceramics. Together with other lanthanides, samarium is utilised in arc lamps for studio lighting and projection.
