Nitinol is a type of shape-memory alloy (SMA) that returns to its original shape when heated after deformation. Engineers utilise the alloy in various technical fields for applications such as actuators, biomedical devices and clamping systems.
Nitinol is a metallic alloy sometimes referred to as a shape memory alloy (SMA). Nitinol alloys exhibit two interrelated properties: shape memory and superelasticity. Shape memory is the ability of a material to undergo deformation at a specified temperature and to recover its original shape when heated beyond its transformation temperature. Superelasticity occurs in a narrow temperature interval slightly above the transformation temperature. Under these conditions, no additional heating is required to restore the original shape.
Shape memory alloys (SMA) are used in technical applications. They provide practical solutions in various fields for different uses (e.g. actuators, biomedical applications, clamping systems etc.). Among commercially available shape memory alloys, nickel–titanium alloys (Ni–Ti and Ni–Ti-based) demonstrate consistent performance and reliability. In addition to its recovery capability, Ni–Ti is applied in medical fields because of its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and fatigue behaviour.
This term describes the restoration of the original shape of a plastically deformed sample upon heating.
This effect is defined as an elastic (reversible) response to an applied temperature change, caused by a phase transformation between the austenitic and martensitic phases of a crystal.
Ms– Starting temperature for the transformation from austenite to martensite
Mf– Final temperature for the transformation from austenite to martensite
As– Starting temperature for the transformation from martensite to austenite
Af– Final temperature for the transformation from martensite to austenite
