Phosphides are compounds that consist of phosphorus in combination with one or more elements that exhibit lower electronegativity than phosphorus. Most elements with electronegativity lower than phosphorus form at least one binary phosphide, and many yield a series of binary phosphides with varying stoichiometries.
In chemistry, a phosphide is a compound that contains the P3− ion or its equivalent. Many different phosphides are known, and they differ significantly in their structures. Many examples are polyphosphides, i.e. solids composed of anionic chains or clusters of phosphorus.
Red Phosphorus: Investigate the applications of red phosphorus, which is used in flame retardants, matches and electronic components. Its non-toxic nature and high thermal stability ensure its use in various industries.
White Phosphorus: Examine the potential of white phosphorus. It exhibits characteristic luminescence and is applied in incendiary devices, smoke screens and chemical syntheses. Its reactivity and light-emitting properties have led to its use in both traditional and modern processes.
Phosphides: Explore the domain of phosphides, compounds formed by the combination of phosphorus with other elements. These compounds are used in semiconductors, batteries and catalysis.
