Rhenium is a silvery heavy metal with an elevated melting point. It exhibits the third highest melting point, following carbon and tungsten. Rhenium is regularly incorporated into superalloys that are used in the manufacture of engine parts.
Rhenium is a chemical element with the symbol Re and atomic number 75. It appears as a silvery-white element that is heavy and is classified as a transition metal. It is one of the rarest elements in the Earth’s crust, occurring at approximately 1 part per billion (ppb) by mass. Rhenium has a melting point that ranks below the two highest melting points among metals, and its boiling point is 5 903 K, which is the second highest among all elements. Rhenium is chemically comparable to manganese and technetium and is primarily recovered as a by-product during the extraction and refinement of molybdenum and copper ores.
Rhenium was discovered in 1925. It is named after the river Rhine in Europe.
