A metal of economic significance is a naturally occurring metallic chemical element that is determined to have high economic value. Chemically, noble metals exhibit lower reactivity compared with most elements (see noble metal).
A precious metal is a naturally occurring metallic chemical element that holds significant economic value. Chemically, precious metals exhibit markedly lower reactivity compared to the majority of elements (see Precious metal).
The main recognised valuable metals are the coinage metals which include gold and silver. Although both have commercial applications, they are predominantly used in art, jewellery and coinage. Other valuable metals comprise the platinum‐group elements. These include Ruthenium, Rhodium, Palladium, Osmium, Iridium and Platinum. Platinum is the most frequently traded. Demand for precious metals is driven by their practical uses and their role as investment assets. Historically, they have maintained higher market prices compared to standard industrial metals.
