Aluminium-Zirconium Master Alloy Description

Aluminium-zirconium master alloys are semi-finished products that can be fabricated in various forms. They consist of a master blend of alloying elements. Depending on the intended use, they are also termed modifiers, hardening agents, or grain refiners. These master alloys are incorporated in aluminium kneaded alloys and cast alloys to adjust the composition and to control the microstructure.

Zirconium is added to specific aluminium–magnesium–zinc alloys such as 7050 to reduce susceptibility to stress corrosion. Zirconium additions in the range of 0.1 to 0.3% are applied to form a fine precipitate of intermetallic particles, thereby inhibiting recovery and recrystallisation.
