MAX Phase Ceramic Material Mo3AlC2 Description

The ceramic MAX phase material Mo3AlC2, a member of the MAX phase family with a purity of >98%, exhibits a unique structure known as the 312 phase. In this structure, the MX layers are strongly bonded through covalent bonds, while the A atomic layers are loosely connected to the MX layers via weaker covalent bonds, allowing the A atoms to detach from the MX layers more easily. This particular bonding arrangement imparts exceptional performance characteristics to the MAX phase. As the thickness of the MX layers increases, the properties of the material approach those of the corresponding binary M-X carbide. Moreover, the performance of the MAX phase can be enhanced by adjusting the thickness of the MX layers.

The MAX phase represents a new class of metallic-ceramic functional materials distinguished by a hexagonal layered structure. It consists of alternating MX and A atomic layers and encompasses over sixty different ternary carbides and nitrides. In this formula, M represents a transition metal, A denotes a main group element, and X signifies carbon or nitrogen. Transition metal carbides and nitrides, referred to as MXenes, constitute a subclass of these materials.
