Introduction In a study of 28 chronic nickel dermatitis patients, 17 experienced symptom aggravation after ingesting 2.5 mg of nickel. A low nickel diet improved dermatitis in 9 patients over 6 weeks, but symptoms in 7 of them returned upon resuming a normal diet. Nickel excretion was tracked for 14 patients before, during, and after the diet using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Although excretion decreased during the diet, no significant difference was found between those whose dermatitis improved and those who showed no change.
