Introduction In this study, the kinetics of nickel absorption, distribution, and elimination were modelled in healthy human volunteers ingesting nickel sulfate (NiSO4) through drinking water and food. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry was employed to analyse nickel in serum, urine, and faeces over a 6-day period. The study revealed that nickel absorption was significantly higher when ingested in water compared to food, demonstrating a profound reduction in bioavailability when dietary constituents are present. The study provides valuable kinetic parameters, reducing uncertainty in toxicological risk assessments of nickel exposure from water and food.
