Introduction	A 28-year-old man developed asthma soon after exposure to nickel sulfate (NiSO4) at a metal-plating factory. His peak expiratory flow rates varied more at work than during off-work periods, with better readings on weekends. Skin tests showed an immediate reaction to NiSO4 at 10 mg/ml. Inhalation challenges with the same concentration caused early bronchial obstruction, indicating a specific allergic mechanism. A comparable asthmatic did not react to NiSO4, suggesting a specific immune response. The patient had IgE antibodies to a NiSO4-human serum albumin antigen. His serum bound 63 Ni, and the test was blocked by nonlabeled nickel sulfate. These findings suggest NiSO4-induced occupational asthma.
