Introduction Micronutrients play a critical role in all metabolic and cellular functions in plants. Their necessity varies among plants, but boron (B), chloride (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) are universally essential for higher plants. Some serve as catalytically active cofactors in enzymes due to their redox-active properties, others activate enzymes, and some stabilise proteins structurally. This review highlights the primary roles of these mineral micronutrients, focusing on their presence in proteins and detailing specific functions.
