Introduction Copper nanowires can be liquid-coated to form flexible, transparent films that could replace indium tin oxide in various applications. However, copper's susceptibility to oxidation is a challenge. Coating with nickel has been shown to enhance oxidation resistance. This study describes the synthesis of copper nanowires with nickel shells and their properties in transparent films. Sheet resistance tests indicate copper and silver films double resistance in 3 and 36 months at room temperature, respectively, while cupronickel nanowires with 20% nickel double resistance over 400 years. A 2:1 Cu:Ni coating gives a neutral grey colour, suitable for displays and windows. The abundance and efficiency of copper and nickel make cupronickel nanowires a viable, sustainable transparent conductor alternative.
