Ferro-Vanadium-Zirconium Powder Introduction
Vanadium was primarily extracted from titanium-containing magnetite ore, which is processed for the production of pig iron. The process involves the aluminothermic reduction of vanadium(V) oxide, aluminium (acting as an oxide getter) and iron scrap. This generates slag containing 20 to 24% vanadium pentoxide, which may subsequently be refined to produce ferrovanadium with 40 to 50% vanadium. Of the 5 090 t of vanadium consumed in the United States in 2008, 84% originated from ferrovanadium, and nearly all vanadium (99%) was used in steel production.
