Fused Silica Description

Quartz glass is the amorphous (glass-like) form of silicon dioxide (quartz, silicon dioxide), initially produced by forming glassy lumps from high-purity quartz after melting at a high temperature exceeding 1 760 °C and subsequently rapid cooling followed by manual crushing and sorting into various grades. Due to its excellent high-temperature resistance, quartz glass from Stanford Advanced Materials (SAM) can be utilised in refractory furnaces, quartz crucibles, water filtration, artificial stone slabs, sandblasting and rust removal, as well as many other applications.

1. Refractory Materials: Given its high-temperature resistance and chemical stability, Fused Silica can be employed to manufacture refractory materials such as firebricks, fire-resistant coatings, and fire-resistant fibres, utilised in the production of refractory components for high-temperature industrial furnaces, glass ovens, and other refractory elements.

2. Water Filtration: Quartz glass is commonly included as part of the filter material for water treatment, for example, in reverse osmosis water purification systems. The microscopic particles of quartz sand effectively filter out contaminants, microorganisms, and particles from the water, thereby enhancing the purity and cleanliness of the water.

3. Artificial Stone Slabs: Fused Silica can serve as one of the main components of artificial stone slabs. By mixing raw materials such as quartz sand, resin, and pigments, it is possible to manufacture highly uniform and durable artificial stone slabs through processing and pressing, suitable for interior decoration, work surfaces, flooring, walls, among others.

4. Sandblasting for Rust Removal: Fused Silica is frequently used in sandblasting for rust removal and surface treatment. During sandblasting, quartz sand particles, propelled at high speeds, eliminate rust spots, dirt, and coatings from metal surfaces, resulting in a smooth surface ready for subsequent painting or surface treatment.
