Introduction to Germanium Dioxide:

Germanium dioxide, also known as germanium oxide (GeO2), germanium(IV) oxide or Germania, is a white powder that is insoluble in water. Germanium is a brittle, grey-white metalloid element. Given its high reactivity, it is not found in its natural state. However, germanium is extracted commercially from zinc ores, certain coals, argyrodite and germanite. It is used as a semiconductor in transistors, solar cells and optical materials.

Our facility has produced high-purity germanium dioxide since 1951. Germanium was extracted from lead and zinc oxide ores to meet the rigorous requirements of the national defence industry. This production contributed to the 'two bombs and one satellite' research programme.

Our production process yields germanium dioxide of 6N quality at a secondary refinement level. The material is used as a feedstock for high-purity metallic germanium or for the synthesis of germanium-based compounds, chemical catalysts and in the pharmaceutical industry. Our annual production capacity is approximately 20 tonnes.

Applications of Germanium Dioxide:

• It is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of poly(ethylene terephthalate) resin and in the production of other germanium compounds.
• It is utilised as an alloying agent and as a phosphor in fluorescent lamps.
• Germanium oxide (GeO2) is used as a material for spectral analysis and as a semiconductor.
• Glasses that contain germanium dioxide exhibit a stable refractive index and optical dispersion; consequently, germanium dioxide is suitable for use in wide-angle lenses.
