Vanadium dioxide is a thermochromic material with a phase transition temperature for pure vanadium dioxide of 68 °C.

If the temperature exceeds the phase transition point, VO2 enters a metallic state. In this state the visible light range remains transparent and the infrared range is highly reflective.

If the temperature is below 68 °C, VO2 adopts a semiconductor state. In this state transmittance is moderate across the visible and infrared ranges. Most solar radiation, including both visible and infrared light, penetrates indoor spaces. The change is reversible. VO2 is used in surface coatings, sensors, imaging and memory devices.

Doping with tungsten reduces the phase transition temperature to approximately room temperature.
