Gold nanowires are nanoscale wires composed of gold, with diameters typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometres. They are characterised by their high aspect ratio, meaning they are significantly longer than they are wide. This unique structure provides them with exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and chemical stability. A nanowire can be defined as a one-dimensional structure having a lateral limit of fewer than 100 nanometres (with no limitation in the longitudinal direction). At this scale, quantum mechanical effects are significant and are therefore also referred to as "quantum wires."
