Monomer Casting Nylon (MC Nylon) is produced by cast polymerisation. This process yields a semi‐crystalline structure with measurable molecular alignment. The material exhibits a tensile strength of 75–85 MPa, a compressive strength of 90–100 MPa and a flexural strength of 100–110 MPa, with a Shore D hardness of 83. It elongates more than 25% before fracture, thereby providing impact resistance. Thermally, it is rated for continuous operation from –40°C to 115°C and for intermittent operation up to 180°C, with a melting point of 220°C. A low linear expansion (5–8×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹) is recorded, thereby maintaining dimensional stability during thermal cycling.

Electrically, MC Nylon functions as an insulator. It shows a volume resistivity of 10¹⁵ Ω·cm, a surface resistivity of 10¹⁵ Ω, a dielectric strength of ≥25 kV/mm and a dielectric constant of 3.7. The material complies with UL 94 V-0 flammability standards and meets FDA/EEC non-toxicity requirements. It has been shown to offer wear resistance and low friction, thereby reducing energy loss in moving parts. Chemically, it resists oils, alcohols and weak acids but degrades in strong oxidising agents. MC Nylon is machinable into precision components, such as gears and bearings, and is available in rods (Ø6–150 mm) and plates (6–200 mm thickness).

1.       Testing Method

(1)    Chemical Composition Analysis – Techniques such as GDMS or XRF are employed to verify compliance with purity requirements.

Q1. What temperature limits apply for continuous vs. intermittent use?

Continuous operation is rated from –40°C to 115°C; intermittent operation is rated from –100°C to 180°C. Exceeding 115°C continuously reduces material performance by more than 30%.

Q2. How does MC Nylon compare to standard nylon electrically?

MC Nylon exhibits a dielectric strength of ≥25 kV/mm, which is approximately 15% higher than standard nylon (approximately 20 kV/mm). Its dielectric constant is 3.7.

Q3. Is MC Nylon suitable for acidic environments?

MC Nylon resists weak acids, for example 10% acetic acid, but it degrades in strong oxidisers (e.g. >30% HNO₃). It is advisable to verify chemical compatibility for specific concentrations.

1.       Common Preparation Methods

Monomer Preparation: Caprolactam is melted and purified under vacuum.

Catalysis: Alkaline catalysts (e.g. NaOH) are employed to initiate anionic polymerisation.
