Messingstutzen Description

Messingstutzen are manufactured from a lead‐enriched alloy (2.5–3.7% Pb). The alloy is produced to precise standards and is designed for high‐speed production and dimensional accuracy. An optimised copper–zinc matrix (60–63% Cu) ensures resistance to corrosion in atmospheric conditions, fresh water and mild chemical environments, while achieving 28% IACS conductivity. The material exhibits a tensile strength of ≥340 MPa and an elongation of 18%, which guarantees reliable performance under cyclic loading. Surface finishes range from unprocessed (Ra ≤ 3.2 µm) to polished or nickel‐plated options, thereby improving appearance and tarnish resistance. Its non‐magnetic property and inherent machinability make it suitable for components that require precision, conductivity and resistance to mild corrosion without inducing tool wear during manufacture.

Manufacturing Process

Testing Procedures

(1) Analysis of the chemical composition is performed using techniques such as GDMS or XRF. This verifies compliance with purity requirements.

(2) Mechanical property testing is conducted. It includes tensile strength, yield strength and elongation tests to assess material performance.

(3) Dimensional inspection measures thickness, width and length. This ensures adherence to specified tolerances.

(4) Surface quality inspection checks for defects such as scratches, cracks or inclusions. Both visual and ultrasonic examinations are applied.

(5) Hardness testing determines the material hardness. This confirms consistency and mechanical reliability.

General Preparation Methods

Forgings are warm drawn at 650–700°C and are subsequently cold drawn to refine the grain structure. The stubs are machined on a CNC lathe using high-speed steel tools and sulphonated cutting oils, utilising the machining properties of C36000. Prior to final processing, a stress-relief anneal is carried out at 260–290°C to prevent distortion. For polished surfaces, the stubs are abraded with a sanding belt (grit 180–600) and then polished using lime-based compounds. The galvanising process comprises an alkaline degreasing, an acid activation and nickel plating at 3–5 A/dm². The final validation includes dimensional inspections using a CMM and conductivity testing in accordance with ASTM B193.
