Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Powder (DGL) is a botanical material derived from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant. The extraction process removes nearly all glycyrrhizin, a water‐soluble triterpenoid saponin naturally present in licorice root. This removal is achieved through a multi‐stage aqueous extraction and purification process, thereby reducing glycyrrhizin content to below 1–3% (often below detection limits). The final powder retains a range of bioactive compounds including flavonoids (such as glabridin, glabrene, liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin and their glycosides), chalcones, coumarins, sterols, polysaccharides and amino acids. It does not exhibit the intense sweetness of whole licorice but presents a slightly bitter and earthy taste with a persistent aftertaste. The compound is primarily soluble in water and aqueous solutions, in keeping with the polar nature of its retained flavonoid glycosides and polysaccharides. The powder remains chemically stable under standard storage conditions (cool, dry and protected from light), although extended exposure to excessive heat, light or humidity may lower its flavonoid levels.

Common Preparation Methods

DGL is produced through a multi-step extraction and purification process. Fresh or dried licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is first finely ground. The ground root then undergoes hot water or aqueous ethanol extraction. The resulting crude extract is processed to remove glycyrrhizin, typically through liquid-liquid chromatography, selective precipitation or membrane filtration.
