Black Cohosh Extract is a hygroscopic powder that ranges in colour from tan to dark brown. It has an earthy odour and a bitter, astringent taste. Its bioactive constituents comprise cycloartane-type triterpene glycosides, including actein, 27-deoxyactein, cimicifugoside, and cimiracemosides, which interact with oestrogen receptors in a selective manner. It exhibits moderate solubility in hydroalcoholic solutions and limited dissolution in water or non-polar solvents. The material is protected from light and oxygen to avoid triterpene degradation and is stored below 25°C in nitrogen-flushed containers. Analytical standardisation is based on 2.5%–8% total triterpene glycosides determined by HPLC quantification. In addition, isoferulic acid and phenolic constituents are controlled. Impurity limits require heavy metals to be under 10 ppm and microbial counts below 1 000 CFU/g. Polysaccharide content causes viscosity changes in aqueous suspensions.
