Sodium Salicylate Powder Description

Sodium salicylate powder crystallises in monoclinal prisms or as a free-flowing crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 160.11 g/mol and a decomposition onset at 200°C. The ortho-hydroxybenzoate structure provides UV absorption maxima at 237 nm and 303 nm in aqueous solutions, facilitating photometric quantification. It exhibits high solubility in polar solvents (Water: 1.25 g/ml at 25°C; Glycerin: 0.8 g/ml), but negligible solubility in non-polar hydrocarbons. The thermal stability extends to 200°C under inert atmosphere, beyond which decarboxylation releases sodium carbonate and phenol. The pharmaceutical quality exhibits controlled impurities: free salicylic acid ≤0.1%, chloride ≤0.01%, sulphate ≤0.02%, and heavy metals (Lead ≤1 ppm, Arsenic ≤0.5 ppm). The powder exhibits moderate hygroscopicity above 75% relative humidity but remains free-flowing at ≤60% relative humidity.

Q1. Can sodium salicylate replace salicylic acid in cosmetics?

In alkaline formulations (pH >7), sodium salicylate offers better solubility and stability than salicylic acid. However, its effectiveness as a keratolytic agent is lower due to ionisation; for peeling products, salicylic acid is still preferred.

Q2. Why does my sodium salicylate solution turn pink?

The pink coloration indicates oxidation due to traces of iron impurities. Add 0.01% EDTA to chelate metals, or use nitrogen-enriched water for dissolution. Choosing a grade with ≤0.5 ppm Iron minimises this issue.

Q3. Is it safe for food preservation?

There are no regulatory approvals for direct use in food. Salicylates may cause allergic reactions (e.g., aspirin sensitivity) and are prohibited in food according to FDA 21 CFR §189.180.

1.Common preparation methods

Sodium salicylate is synthesised via Kolbe-Schmitt carboxylation, where sodium phenolate reacts with carbon dioxide under pressure (4-7 atm) at 125°C to produce sodium salicylate. The crude product is acidified with sulphuric acid to pH 2-3, causing salicylic acid to precipitate, which is then neutralised with sodium carbonate. Impurities (phenol, catechol) are removed through activated carbon treatment and vacuum distillation. Recrystallisation from ethanol-water (3:1 v/v) yields pharmaceutical quality crystals, which are centrifuged, washed with cold ethanol, and dried at 60°C under reduced pressure to achieve a moisture content of ≤0.1%. Final milling results in a powder with 80% of particles between 50-200 μm.
