Sodium Formate Powder crystallizes as orthorhombic hygroscopic crystals or free-flowing granules with a molecular weight of 68.01 g/mol and a decomposition onset at >400°C. The formate ion (HCOO⁻) provides strong reducing capacity (redox potential -0.43 V), facilitating rapid conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in industrial processes. It demonstrates exceptional solubility in water (97.2 g/100mL at 20°C), moderate solubility in glycerol (16 g/100mL), and negligible solubility in nonpolar solvents. Thermal stability extends to 253°C (melting point), beyond which decomposition releases hydrogen and sodium oxalate.
