Tungsten (chemical symbol: W, atomic number: 74) is a d-block element from group 6 and period 6 with an atomic mass of 183.84. Its electrons are distributed as 2, 8, 18, 32, 12 and 2 in the respective shells. The electron configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d4 6s2. The Bohr radius is 139 pm and the van der Waals radius is 210 pm. Tungsten was discovered in 1781 by Torbern Bergman and first isolated in 1783 by Juan José Elhuyar and Fausto Elhuyar. In elemental form it shows a grey-white, lustrous appearance. Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metallic elements. Its density is comparable to that of uranium or gold and is approximately 1.7 times that of lead. Tungsten alloys are used for manufacturing filaments and targets in X-ray tubes. It occurs in the minerals scheelite (CaWO4) and wolframite ((Fe, Mn)WO4).
